Mamola won two GPs on the 'up-side own' 1984 NSR500 whilst filling in for Spencer. He scored a brilliant victory over Lawson at the old, fast Silverstone, running a 117.628mph fastest lap along the way. He also rode on Michelin radial tyres in the very early stages of radial tyre development for motorcycles. He celebrated the win with a fantastic wheelie out of Copse on the slowdown lap. Lawson was asked what he made of the race. "I stayed with him for a time, then Randy gassed it up real good," he said in his Californian drawl.

Mamola also won at Mugello from Raymond Roche. Despite its quirks, the '84 bike was a winner in the hands of a very determined ride like Mamola.
