Unadilla Retro Motocross National

Submitted by on August 18, 2009

The latest round of the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship was billed as a “Retro” event. The legendary track at the Unadilla Valley Sports Center played host to a celebration 40 years of racing at the historic facility.

Teams, sponsors and equipment manufacturers got into the spirit with retro gear. Fox Racing had their riders decked out in 70s style Fox clothing with names of former champions like “Bomber”, “Showtime” and “The Beast” blazened across the back of  current rider’s nylons.

Thor got into the spirit with a Mark Barnett  inspired tribute helmet for Chad Reed. Answer Racing raided their cupboards and brought some original 80s gear previously worn by Mike Keidrowski.

The Honda Red Bull Racing guys had  retro-themed bikes, each with different colored plastic, graphics, and number style, and each one covering a different decade. My personal favourite is the all silver bike inspired by the Elsinore Hondas of the early 70s

Old school posters from previous events and a line up of vintage bikes completed the celebration.

I don’t think it will be long before we see the big MX clothing suppliers all stocking a range of retro gear.
