Special Edition RC Cola Cans, Portland IndyCar 1986

Submitted by on October 25, 2009

I just came across this set of Royal Crown Cola Special Edition cans.

It seems that each year in Portland, Oregon, USA there is a thing called the Rose Festival.  Well, back in 1986 RC Cola did a limited edition run of ten cans to promote the upcoming Portland PPG Indy Car World Series race.

The “Portland Rose Festival Presents The Indy Cars Are Coming”   Set of ten Cola Cans featured some of the biggest names in IndyCar. Each can had an illustration of the driver along with career stats. Drivers depicted were:

Mario Andretti
Michael Andretti
Emerson Fittipaldi
Rick Mears
Bobby Rahal
Johnny Rutherford
Tom Sneva
Danny Sullvan
Al Unser
Al Unser Jr.

The 1986 Portland Race will always be remembered as the race in which Mario Andretti, beat son Michael by seven one hundeths of a second on Father’s Day, after Michael ran out of fuel on the last corner of the last lap.
