RAC Rally 1977: Pure audio joy

Submitted by on November 24, 20095 Comments

The biggest problem with the future is that at some point, there will be electric racing and rally cars that make no noise.

The best part of motor racing is the beautiful music the cars produce. That is what makes Piero Comanducci’s footage from the RAC Rally in 1977 so perfect. The video captures not just the sight of the worlds best drivers hurling their machines around the forest, but importantly it records the glorious sounds of howling engines and tyres battling for grip.

It is pure joy, so turn it up sit back and enjoy.

Drivers in the video (in order of appearence)
1 – Roger Clark (Ford Escort RS1800)
4 – Pentti Airikkala (Vauxhall Chevette 2300)
5 – Björn Waldegard (Ford Escort RS1800)
7 – Sandro Munari (Lancia Stratos HF)
8 – Hannu Mikkola (Toyota Celica)
9 – Ari Vatanen (Ford Escort RS1800)
29 – Brian Culcheth (Triumph TR7)
23 – Russell Brookes (Ford Escort RS1800)
70 – David Thompson (Ford Escort RS1800)
26 – Andy Dawson (Ford Escort RS1800)
24 – Tony Pond (Triumph TR7)

The 1977 Lombard RAC Rally saw Bjorn Waldegard take the laurels in his British Airways sponsored Ford Escort RS 1800.

That sent shivers down my spine.

Great sounds and memories. Odd seeing Roger Clark in a car that didn’t have Cossack or Esso all over it! I remember the glorious sound of the Stratos and the way it bounced off the valley-sides to herald its arrival long before you saw that stunning car – only the Rally 037 ever matched it.

And I’m sure I’m stageside in at least one of those clips…
