Shannons sponsors AMCN International Island Classic Parade

Submitted by on September 19, 2010

Shannons is getting on its bike for the 18th AMCN International Island Classic held over the Australia Day weekend (21-23 January) next year, sponsoring the event’s official Parade Lap of notable motorcycles on the Sunday.

Due to its huge popularity with enthusiasts wanting to show off their machines on the famous Grand Prix circuit, the Shannons Parade in 2011 will be capped at 125 entries, with the focus on the bikes, rather than their riders.

As in previous years, four special bikes will be chosen to lead the Shannons Parade and to be featured on the course commentary during their lap of honour.

Shannons will also support their sponsorship of the Parade Lap with a display of special motorcycles next to their eye-catching Super Rig, which will be a centrepiece of the AMCN International Island Classic paddock area.

Some of the greatest names on two wheels will also be attending the annual historic ‘Classic, which in 2010 attracted a record crowd of nearly 20,000, making it Australia’s biggest domestic motorcycle meeting behind only the MotoGP and World SBK events.

This year a record 365 entrants from all corners of the world took part in the meeting – 75 in the high-profile International Challenge for 1973-1982 Forgotten Era motorcycles that will again be a support category at the 2010 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The Forgotten Era International Challenge is a teams’ event that pits riders from Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom against each other over four points-scoring heats, with an overall individual points scoring trophy up for grabs.

In addition, a full support program for Veteran, Vintage, Classic and Post-classic solos and sidecars will ensure three days of non-stop on-track action at Australia’s premier Historic two-wheel festival.

Shannons Business Development Manager for Victoria, Richard Sanders, said Shannons had a long association with Phillip Island going back to the late 1970s when the company’s founder, Robert Shannon, supported the circuit’s very first historic motor race meeting.

“Since then Shannons has been a consistent sponsor of historic car and motorcycle events at Phillip Island – most recently the inaugural Shannons Historic Road Race Championships – because it’s a very special place for all enthusiasts,” he said.
