Video: 1970 Spanish Grand Prix

Submitted by on February 2, 2011

Enjoy this stirring video from the action packed 1970 Spanish Grand Prix.

The clip kicks off with some great interviews, as F1 had just introduced a new rule which meant the top 10 “seeded” drivers did not have to qualify. There is some fascinating feedback from Jackie Stewart, Ken Tyrrell and Frank Williams regarding their thoughts on the matter.

Of course the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix was also famous for the firely crash between Jackie Oliver’s BRM and Jacky Ickx’s Ferrari. In the video, Oliver explains how he had complete brake loss and had no choice but to cut the circuit in an attempt to wash off speed. Unfortunately in the process he T-bones Ickx and chaos ensues.

Also worth a look are the photos from the Cahier Archive from the event here.
