1911 Indy 500 newsreel footage

Submitted by on May 25, 20114 Comments

When a race is 40 years older than the Formula 1 World Championship, the newsreels have to both show the race highlights and explain how an auto race works. “Cars remain in platoon formation for the first lap”—platoon formation. That’s the first time I’ve heard that term: definitely ready for a comeback.

Many thanks indeed for posting this valuable and informative footage. The centenary of the Indy has attracted great attention in Canada, where I now live. In fact, the USA’s Sports illustrated is including the official Indy programme in its current issue. What with Motor Sport’s review of the race history, I am appreciating even more the significance of the race.

    Keep up the good work!

This is truly an awesome film short. I’ve never even seen this film before. My family and I have just recently within the last 3-5 years taken an interest in my great great grand fathers racing carer and to see him in the first 5 seconds of this film being crowned world speed king is truly an awesome feeling. I’ve have photos of him with the crown on top of his head, but never a video; truly awesome. Also to see him racing in the race in the number 45 benz car. The pit crew changes the tire on the car in the video. this is truly an awesome feeling.

Thank you so much for sharing this
