Video+ Photos: Kevin Weeks wins Supaloc Classic Targa Adelaide

South Australian Kevin Weeks has completed the perfect weekend, taking his 1974 Porsche 911 Carerra RS to top honours at Supaloc Classic Targa Adelaide.

Weeks won the Shannons Classic Outright competition, for cars built before 1986, by over three minutes from Matt Selley’s 1974 Porsche, securing him top points in the opening round of the four-event CAMS Australian Targa Championship.

He also was the fastest in the field, beating home all comers including the reigning Targa Tasmania titleholder, Tony Quinn in a 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R, to win the Supaloc Overall title. Quinn and Weeks had a mighty tussle across the three days. Quinn’s drive ended sadly, however, when he blew his engine on the final stage when second place was clearly his.

Even when they tried to slow Weeks with a handicap they couldn’t stop the feisty 61 year-old from dominating. He and co-driver Toni Feaver also won the Late Classic Handicap competition.

Weeks couldn’t win the Early Classic Handicap competition though, no matter how hard he drove. That title is reserved for cars built before 1966 and was won by Adelaide fashion industry entrepreneur, Michael Lamprell, in his pulsating 1964 Ford Mustang.

Weeks’ victory was emphatic. The former Classic Adelaide winner was not headed at any time across the three days of competition.

Fellow South Australian, Matt Selley, drove a clean rally but could not match the pace of Weeks finishing three minutes, 17 seconds in arrears, claiming second place in both Classic Outright and Supaloc Overall categories. West Australian Tolley Challis, in another 1974 Porsche 911, finished third, 16 seconds further back after having troubles with his pace notes on the final day.

“That was the toughest rally we’ve ever done in a classic car,” Weeks said at the finish at the Intercontinental Hotel.

“The intensity of the battle with (Tony) Quinn and trying to keep up with his Nissan was incredible, and fortunately our car stayed together.

“It says a lot about the car. A lot of the stages really suited the car, but others didn’t. We certainly pushed to the limit and we had nothing left. The only thing to top this event in terms of toughness is Targa Tasmania.”

In the other titles on offer, South Australian Tim Possingham won the won Contemporary Classic competition in a 1990 Nissan Skyline GT-R after Tony Quinn’s engine failure, while there was a tie in the Regularity trophy between Peter Mayer in his Porsche Cayman S, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X of John Amos.
