March 89P Porsche

In 1989 Teo Fabi drove his Quaker State Oil sponsored Porsche to its only victory in the CART Series at the Red Roof Inns 200 on the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, USA. It was also the last CART win for chassis maker March.

What a great surprise. My father and I attended that race. Being a huge Porsche fan my father was quite pleased. Being an Al Unser Jr. fan (who finished second) I wasn’t so happy. Still I must admit Teo drove a masterful race.

The Porsche lead with Al Jr on his tail all through the first fuel run then Al brilliantly used a slower car as a pick and got by Fabi. Fabi pitted a couple of laps before Al.

Al Jr. ended up behind a slow car coming out of the pits and couldn’t get past until after the keyhole going on to the back stretch. The problem for Al was that Fabi closed up, had a free run around the keyhole which gave him a good launch onto the long backstretch. Al defended the inside at the end of the straight but Fabi had so much momentum that he sailed it past him on the outside in the braking zone and got past him in a brilliant outside pass that make the big crowd on the hillside where I was jump to their feet with a big roar you can clearly hear in the TV broadcast (you can see the race on YouTube)

They hadn’t got all the fuel in Fabi’s car at his pit stop and he had a lighter car at that point. I thought they had done it on purpose as a short fuel strategy but in fact it was an error. The result was that Fabi had the lead and a lighter car and in a matter of ten laps or so Al drove the rear tires off the car trying to keep up. With Al’s rears shot Fabi was free to sail and built up a 20 second lead which enabled him to come in, get the rest of his fuel and win the race.

The Porsche was the class of the field all day.
