956 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans

For the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans, the event’s 50th anniversary, Porsche brought along their brand-spanking new 956. And they did alright.

The ’82 race was the first race in the World Endurance Championship and also the first event featuring new Group C rules, which were replacing Group 6. With the new rules in place, Porsche needed a car to replace their extremely successful 936, which had won the race three times; most recently with Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell in 1981.

Thus began development of the 956. This short documentary from Porsche goes behind the scenes to tell the story of its development and chronicles its journey through the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans.
