When Mark Donohue injured himself in a crash during testing for the ’72 championship, his teammate George Follmer hopped into the 850 horsepower, 5-liter flat-twelve 917/10 003 and went on to win five of the nine races in the ’72 season and claim the drivers’ championship.

Follmer and the 917/10 returned for the ’73 season, but by then Donohue was back and had applied all that he had learned the year before developing the 917/10 to his development of a 917/30. The new car, which eventually proved too nutty even for Can Am, pumped out a ridiculous collection of horses; well on the way to 1600, and Donohue completely dominated the ’73 season in it, with Follmer and this 917/10 second in the drivers’ championship.

With its significant race history and success, Mecum expect that this car will set a new record for a Porsche sold at a public auction, and top the $4.4 Million Porsche 917/30 at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island 2012 auction.

Mecum’s Monterey, CA, The Daytime Auction will be held on Spaon Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel August 16-18, 2012. Head to their site here for more info.
