Crank Up the Pure Sounds of the Lancia Rally 037 Group B

Submitted by on April 3, 2015

Lancia Rally 037

Enjoy a few minutes of aural ecstasy with the Lancia Rally 037 Group B on full noise.

While Audi was busy developing the four-wheel-drive system that would ultimately change the sport forever, Lancia developed the car that took rear-wheel-drive rallying to its zenith.

It was the Lancia Rally 037 versus the Audi Quattro A1, and when the two teams collided in the 1983 World Rally Championship the match-up made for thrilling competition.

The pair dominated the season, with Audi coming on strong in the second half as they developed the Quattro A1 and A2. The Quattro drove Hannu Mikkola to the drivers’ title ahead of Walter Röhrl, but Markku Alén, Attilio Bettega, and Walter Röhrl’s were able to scrape ahead to secure the manufacturers’ title by just two points. The Lancia Rally 037 became the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship.

Technology may have moved on quickly for the 037, but its majesty hasn’t dulled at all. This video follows the cars around a few of 2013’s rally events, the 11° Rally Legend, Revival Valpantena and the Monza Rally Show, capturing some spectacular sideways moments and the stunning symphony of its fiery four-cylinder.

Turn it up loud, and enjoy.
