For Sale: 1980 Porsche Kremer 935 K-3

Submitted by on July 29, 2011

Interscope Racing Team – Danny Ongais, Ted Field, Milt Minter

Chassis No. 0000017

Thirteen 935 K3 cars were built by Kremer Racing, the designation K3 indicating they were the third generation of the 935. Built upon a Porsche factory-supplied tub, the K3 was fitted with a 3.2 liter engine, larger KKK turbos, and an air-to-air intercooler system in place of the air-to-water systems found on earlier cars. Depending upon boost, the K3 was good for anywhere between 740 and 800 horsepower. K3 cars also featured a larger, sturdier roll cage, a lower chassis, and a lightweight carbon fiber and Kevlar body designed for high aerodynamic down-force.

Number 0000017 was originally sold to Ted Field of the Interscope Team and, in 1980, had a very successful year. With Field, Danny Ongais and Milt Minter at the wheel, the car finished 3rd at the 24 Hours of Daytona, 2nd at Sebring and Lime Rock, 3rd at Golden State and Mosport, and scored fastest lap at Daytona, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, and Mosport.

At the Daytona Finale, Danny Ongais qualified on the pole and set the fastest lap. A “coming together” with Bill Whittington unfortunately put both cars out of the race.

Canepa Design has just completed a concours level mechanical and cosmetic restoration of the car to its 1980 racing configuration. It was completely disassembled and the chassis stripped to bare metal, then painstakingly restored with special attention given to body fit and panel gaps. It was then repainted in its original black finish with Interscope livery.

In the cockpit, all the instruments have been rebuilt and new dash top material installed. The seat was restored using factory-correct materials and the roll cage was inspected and restored to its natural aluminum finish. The electrical system and wiring loom were removed from the car, cleaned, and fully tested.

Mechanically, every component of the car has been inspected, restored and rebuilt as necessary. The engine, including the injectors and fuel injection pump, has been completely rebuilt. The transmission has also been rebuilt. All of the suspension components have been crack checked, the shocks have been rebuilt, and new wheel bearings have been installed. The brake calipers and master cylinder have been rebuilt, and new fuel and oil lines installed. A full racing alignment, including corner weights, has been done. Thoroughly detailed inside and out, this 935 is now ready for vintage racing.
