This awe inspiring 1976 Porsche 934 Turbo RSR is one of just 31 cars built. It competed successfully in the World Championship for Makes as well as Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft and other series of the period. It’s up for sale at William i’Anson.

The car, 930 670 0161, was the 28th Group 4 934 built. It went to Nicholas Koob, who debuted it at the Val d’Aisne hill climb in Belgium in April. Its first win came just a few months later at Colmar-Berg in the Benelux series.

Han-Christian Jurgensen took the car over in 1977, beginning the car’s career in the DRM and picking up eleven wins as he piloted the car through into 1979.

The car would leave Europe with the new decade, heading to the Caribbean and competing in IMSA GTO at the hands of Mandy Gonzalez. Gonzalez was responsible for the car’s debut in the Sebring 12 Hours, when he, Diego Febles and Chiqui Soldevilla drove it to second place in class at the 1980 event.

One more run in the States, in the Road Atlanta 100, and 0161 was back in Europe for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Febles once again joined Gonzalez at the wheel, with Francisco Romero joining the team for the event. The car qualified well, third in class, but would make an unplanned exit from the track just after the half way point of the race and enter an early retirement.

0161 gained its distinctive wing in 1981, when Gonzalez upgraded it with the winged boot lid and widened the wheel arches. Its next upgrade was more significant, with Gonzalez commissioning Chuck Gaa of GAACO in Atlanta to bump it up to 934/5 spec. This included strengthening the roll cage, raising the gearbox mountings and flaring the wheel arches even further.

After a 6th place in class and 20th overall finish in the 1983 Sebring 12 Hours, the car received a 930/79 spec engine built by Hans Mandt and featuring a single twin-scroll turbo and twin waste gates.

Gonzalez and 0161’s time together came to an end following the Caguas 200km late in 1983, when he sold it to Kikos Fonseca. Fonseca removed the 930/79 motor, instead fitting a motor from a 962. He also gave the car the ability to swap between 934 and 935 bodywork so that he could run in GTO with the 934 bodywork in America and 935 bodywork when racing in Latin America.

Fonesca found a lot of success in the car racing in Latin America, picking up two wins in ’84 and another three in ’85. In 1986 he took the Porsche to the States in 934 spec, competing at Daytona as well as in the Miami GP, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Riverside, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen and scoring a season-best third at West Palm Beach before heading back to Puerto Rico for the Caguas 3 Hours.

Fonesca retired the car in 1989, reuniting it with the 930/79 motor he bought it with and letting it rest in storage for a few years. In 1994 the pair parted ways, with Dale Kennet becoming its next custodian. Kennet began stripping it for a rebuild, but would sell it to Jim Torres in 1999 before he completed the project.

Torres completed the restoration and put the car back on the track, competing in the Daytona 24 Minutes in 2000. A few years later it went to Rick Davis, who road registered it and kept it until 2008.

2010 saw 0161 return to Europe in the hands of Mauro Borella. Borella sent it to Kremer Racing and entrusted them with a restoration back to the 934/5 specification of its time with Mandy Gonzales. By 2013 the restoration was complete and the car made its way to its current owner in the United States in 2014.

Since then the car has been active in historic motorsport, running frequently at Laguna Seca and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion as well as an entry at Porsche’s Rennsport Reunion. It’s recently enjoyed an engine and gearbox rebuild and is fit to continue its historic motorsport career.

0161 will be sold with its 930/71 engine components, factory 934 tail, 934 rear wheel arches and restored period seats as well as its original RSR front brake calipers and aluminum roll cage. In any of its specifications, it will be most welcome at historic motorsport events around the world.
