The Iron Horse – Onboard with Phil Read 1974

Submitted by Rich Fowler on November 11, 2009 – 11:44 AM4 Comments

I can’t find much information about this brilliant footage of Phil Read on his MV Agusta 500-4, but it’s great!  It seems the video is from a movie called The Iron Horse and was made by Frenchman Pierre-William Glenn in 1974.

The sound of that deep, throaty four stroke engine sends shivers down your spine. Let’s not forget that Read’s 500cc World Championship victory in 1974 was the last year a four stroke won the world title, before the advent of the MotoGP class in 2002. It was also the last championship for an Italian marque until Casey Stoner clinched the crown for Ducati in 2007.

Turn it up and hang on!

The sound of that MV is music to my ears. The credits are bloody annoying though.

It’s a great film. I got the DVD during a trip to France a couple of years ago. Can’t understand most of what they’re saying (all in French), but the film does a great job of showing what the racing scene was like “back then”…even the pro guys are working out of a tiny van crammed with parts and a bunk. We won’t even mention the half-dozen straw bales providing a safety barrier.

Thank you so very much for this informative history lesson.. I learned allot and it kept me interested from beginning to end. Wonderful job and much appreciated is the time and effort of the writer to combine all the facts, and figures and present them so your average reader becomes fascinated. Well done…. yesir
