Ford Transit Supervan
When is a van not a van? When its a 400HP V8 powered Ford Transit Supervan!
The Supervan first appeared at Brands Hatch in 1971. Essentially it was a GT40 chassis with a mid mounted Gurney Weslake V8, which powered the Mark 1 Transit to 60mph in seven seconds and on to a top speed of around 150 mph.
The machine was built for Ford by Terry Drury Racing and sported a 5-speed transmission, with fully independent suspension and brakes from the iconic Ford GT40.
Externally the van looked very much like a standard Transit, other than some 70s racing stripes and a Ford logo. The wheel arches were flared but barely covered the wider wheels.
Aerodynamically it was much like a brick.
In 1978 Ford released the Transit Mark 2 and Supervan 2 was born. Even Jackie Stewart had a go. Then in 1995 along came Supervan 3! Here’s hoping for Supervan 4.
