For Slot Mods, 12 Hours Just Isn’t Enough

Submitted by on July 19, 2011

Slot cars are great fun. You can slide them around nicely, and it can all get extremely competitive. So when I heard about Slot Mods’ limited edition replica cars and tracks, I was looking forward to some beautiful slot cars replicating race cars like the Porsche 917, and some fun classic tracks to race them on.

What I didn’t expect, was for them to make the whole track out of a 917!

Slot Mods are known for incredible attention to detail, and have done some amazing work – like the ’69 Laguna Seca recreation they did for Ford’s booth at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto show. This, however, takes it to a whole new level.

Period-accurate livery and design, fiberglass body panels, aluminium 3-piece centre lock wheels, race-worn rubber, and functional head and tail lights make up the model of the Porsche 917. It’s the same Porsche 917 that Vic Elford and Gerald Larrousse took to victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1971. Only with a twist – hit a button and the shell peels back to reveal a 1/32 scale wooden slot car raceway packed with all the retro details you need to evoke the ’71 12 Hours of Sebring.

If the Porsche 917 isn’t for you, Slot Mods have a Ford GT40, Ferrari P4, and Lola T70 to offer you as well.

This is why I need a man cave.
