For Sale: 1972 March Formula Ford 729-1
The March Formula Ford 729-1 is a wonderful historic race ready car with a very special and unique history. It has the distinction of being the very first Formula Ford produced by Wayne Mitchell Engineering (WME) in California.
Wayne Mitchell raced in Formula Three in Europe and became friends with Robin Herd and Graham Coaker, the principals of MARCH Engineering LTD in Oxfordshire England.March was busy producing cars for other Formulas and so they appointed Wayne to build March Formula Fords, for the USA market to satisfy demand there. March supplied the chassis’ (made by Arch Motors) and most other items. Parts that were not available from the UK were supplied by WME ex USA. The Arch Motors chassis utilized MARCH’s highly successful F-3 space frame design. The chassis has a unique number “AM72-4” stamped on a rear suspension component. This denotes that the chassis was the fourth made by Arch Motors in 1972 and the first to be imported into the States. Cars prior to this were made in the UK. The car was then outfitted with all the FF mechanicals, a F-3 body (without the wings!)
Wayne Mitchell then put his own chassis plate on the dash. 729-1 is the first car (of 11) produced by WME. The plate has a green background, the same as a US dollar bill. Wayne Mitchell said that this was to be a good omen for the new business.
The car was totally refurbished in the USA by Powerslide Motorsports before being imported to Australia. It features in many Formula Ford publications. It was then prepared for racing in Australia but has only done one race meeting and two Sprint meetings. It is a very pretty car and “on the money”.
The car comes with a current log book, Certificate of Description and assorted spares. There is also a lot of correspondence with Wayne Mitchell and previous owners of the car.
