For Sale: 1953 Porsche pre 356 A

Submitted by on September 7, 2011

This rare 1953 Porsche 356 Pre A has an amazing story behind it as it was indeed the very first RHD car officially car sold by the newly appointed first Porsche dealership in the UK called AFN Garages.Chassis number 51552 was sold on January, 28th 1954 to the racing driver Ted Wooley and he immediately started to campaign the car in many events which included taking the car to Goodwood in 1954, in fact it was the first Porsche apparently to race there with great success. This was the start of a long and busy life for this little German Coupe.

In August 1954 it won the production class race at Silverstone, raced at the Brighton speed trials was then campaigned heavily in Europe including the Rally Soleil Cannes as well as Rally of the Dams in 1955. Eligible for most of the major classic events this fully restored 356 was done by the well known and respected restorer by Roger Bray in the UK after he purchased it from AFN in a very sorry state.

Done over a period of 5 years the car was brought back from the dead by Roger retaining as many original parts as possible.

The car was invited to Goodwood Revival in 2008 where it ran in the Fordwater Trophy and in preparation for this the car is now running a competition 1600 cc engine done by well know Porsche specialist Vic Skirmants in the USA and is producing about 125 bhp! It comes with a period 1500 cc engine that requires rebuilding as well as the original seats, MPH Speedo and race exhaust tail pipe!

There is a wonderful history file for the car with many period pictures and correspondence for gathered over the years that show this historic car being used to the full.

One interesting fact that should also be mentioned is that Ted Wooley who was in the RNVR, was also awarded two George Medals for gallantry, one in 1941 and the other in 1942 for undaunted devotion to duty for dealing with a mine on the third storey of a flour mill in London’s Docklands where the clock re started twice but was rendered safe!! and another in Malta.

Please contact us for more of the amazing history on this important car. We have many shots of it racing at Goodwood, Silverstone and in Europe and the cars history is fantastic. Retaining many period accessories and ready to use.
