Tommi Makinen: Figher Pilot – Photo of the Day

Submitted by on October 13, 2014

For six seasons spanning 1996 to 2001, Tommi Makinen was a Mitsubishi icon. He drove the Lancer Evolution III, IV, V and V6 to World Championship victories in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. His worst ever final finish was an impressive fifth, and he placed third in 2001 before bowing out and going to Subaru, a move which would note the beginning of the end of his incredible WRC career.

Here we see Tommi Makinen in his finest element, soaring through the air in the brutal all wheel drive, turbocharged Lancer Evolution against the likes of Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankkunen. What a fantastic era of rally.
