Brabham BT6

Spend a few minutes going vintage racing in a 1963 Brabham BT6 thank to this brilliant little video that features lots of good bits sliding around on skinny tyres.

Father and son team Stuart and Jonathon Hughes got into motorsport like many quick drivers – racing go karts at an early age. Jonathon’s the man behind the wheel, and he’s pretty quick. From go-karts he progressed to Formula Vee and was eventually offered a drive in Formula 3. That’s where the plot-central twist comes in, however – the pair declined the drive, deciding that the costs and risks involved were too great.

It would be 2006 before they started looking into racing again, and they found their way through vintage racing. A Formula Junior race at the 2011 Silverstone Classic showed them where they wanted to be, and they set about finding a Brabham BT6.

They did – and it’s beautiful. The car raced in the Temporada Argentina in period and was on pole at Monaco for the 1964 Formula Junior race, with Jackie Stewart one spot back in second. It’s quick, and Jonathon’s clearly a tidy steerer.

This video from Drive tells their story, and features plenty of sliding about on skinny tyres set to the wonderful engine note of the Ford-powered Brabham BT6.
