This iconic Kremer Racing 1973 Porsche Carrera 2.8 RSR won the 1973 European GT Championship, found success in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and developed a legendary racing resume. It was so successful, in fact, that it earned an iconic spot on Porsche’s celebratory Porsche Cup ’73 and Europe GT Championship ’73 posters.

It’s up for sale at Maxted-Page.

The car, chassis #0885, is one of the forty nine M491 light weight RSRs built by the Porsche factory. It was supplied to the Oldenkott Tobacco Company and went to Kremer Racing who would run it in the 1973 European GT Championship.

0885 was raced prodigiously in 1973, spending much of the season on the podium and eventually securing the European GT title. It was primarily driven by Clemens Schickentanz, although Paul Keller and Gunter Steckkoenig would join him for the Nürburgring 1000kms and Porsche legend John Fitzpatrick would partner with him in the Spa 1000 kilometers.

At the conclusion of the season Hubert Striebig bought the car, updating it to 3.0 RSR specification to race in 1974. Following that Louis Meznarie entered it into the 1974 Le Mans 4 Hours, in which Striebig would drive to 8th overall. The car took a class win at Nogaro and second in Group 4 at Magny Cours, before crashing out of the 24 Hours of Le Mans mid-way through the year.

It was fully rebuilt for 1975 and returned for another competition season, although it would only enjoy two outings – the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Tour de France Automobile. Striebig was at the helm once again for the 24 Hours of Le Mans joined by Helmut Kirschoffer and Pierre Mauroy, and this year the trio would complete the race, bringing the car home in 28th overall. The Tour de France saw 0885 tricked out in rally gear, although it ultimately didn’t finish the rally epic.

0885 was then sold to Alan Schick, who ran it in hill climbs in 1976 and ’77. An accident in ’77 saw the front wing badly damaged, which resulted in the car retiring from its period career and eventually sold to the Almeras brothers. In 1986 they would sell it on to the President of the Club Porsche de France, Philippe Aunay, who restored it back to its factory 2.8-litre RSR specification.

Aunay eventually sold the car to its current owner in 1997, who sent it to Porsche Specialist Dr. S Brunn to strip and rebuild it to FIA competition specification. Thus began its historic racing career and from 1998 to 2000 it raced consistently in European Group 4 historic events.

Today it remains in correct and immaculate condition, and has even secured United Kingdom road registration. Sold with a well-maintained and exceedingly complete history file, this is a legendary race car that’ll provide an entry to historic racing events around the world.

The car is up for sale at Maxted-Page, and you can find full details on Maxted-Page’s official website here.
