McLaren F1 GTR Le Mans

In which JJ Lehto and team romp them in the rain – the story of the McLaren F1 GTR in the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Produced by Electronic Arts and McLaren Cars, McLaren at Le Mans: Pursuit of Perfection is a documentary following the development of the McLaren F1 LM through to the GTR race car and the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.

That year’s race was McLaren’s first 24 Hours of Le Mans, and they would secure a few more firsts by the time they took the chequered flag. The Lanzante Motorsport-prepared and run Mclaren F1 GTR of Kokusai Kaihatsu Racing won the race, securing victory on McLaren’s first attempt. The car was driven by JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya, and their victory would make Lehto the first Finnish driver to win The Great Race as well as Sekiya the first from Japan.

The Courage C34 of Mario Andretti, Éric Hélary and Bob Wollek took second place, but the remaining three spots were all filled by McLarens.

The story of the GT1-class McLarens that outran a field of Le Mans prototypes during one of the wettest races in the event’s history is a great one. Take an afternoon break, and enjoy it.
