The HSRCA 2021 Sydney Classic to Honour Ron Tauranac AO and Welcome Heritage Touring Cars, Australian 5 Litre Touring Cars and MG Racing Australia

In tribute to Ron Tauranac, the HSRCA’s 2021 Sydney Classic will bring a collection of significant Brabham and RALT race cars to Sydney Motorsport Park over June 12-13, in an extraordinary weekend of motor racing.

In addition to celebrating Tauranac’s contribution to motor sport with feature races, parade laps and displays of significant Brabham and RALT race cars, the meeting will feature the iconic Group C and A touring cars of the Heritage Touring Cars series. The magnificent machines of MG Racing Australia and Australian 5 Litre Touring Cars also headline the event alongside many other historic race categories. This will be the HSRCA’s first meeting featuring night racing.

The club is honoured to celebrate the life and work of motorsport legend Ron Tauranac, who passed away in 2020. Tauranac played a key role in securing multiple Formula 1 World Championships with Jack Brabham and was prominent in motorsport internationally. Tauranac founded the Brabham racing team with Sir Jack Brabham in 1962 and the pair found great success at the pinnacle of the sport, including constructor and drivers’ titles in 1966 and ‘67.

After moving on from Brabham, Tauranac founded RALT in 1974. There, he designed and built cars that found success in Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula 3000 and Formula Atlantic and carried more than a few world champions to victory.

Repco-Brabham BT-19

In 1966, Jack Brabham drove the Tauranac-designed BT-19 to victory in four straight races to claim the Formula One World Championship both as a driver and constructor. With great thanks to Repco, this car will be present at the Sydney Classic to take part in the celebrations, along with many other significant Tauranac machines.

Heritage Touring Cars at the 2021 HSRCA Sydney Classic

We are also pleased to be joined by the Heritage Touring Cars series. The Legends of Bathurst recapture the golden age of Australian motorsport, racing iconic Australian Group C and Group A touring cars around the country. These cars made history in races like the Bathurst 1000 and at circuits such as Lakeside and Sandown and include legends like the Ford Sierra RS500, BMW 635CSi and ‘Godzilla’, Nissan’s GT-R, which will compete with significant Commodores, Falcons, Toranas, Jaguars, Mustangs and more.

MG Racing Australia at the 2021 HSRCA Sydney Classic

Complimenting the Group C and A cars are the early V8 Supercars of the Australian 5 Litre Touring Car Association. These are the early V8 Supercars which raced from 1993 to 2002. MG Racing Australia was a lauded addition to the entry of 2019’s Sydney Classic, and we are thrilled to welcome the series back for 2021. The series comprises a huge range of race and sporting MGs, from the mighty 5.6-litre MG B GT V8, complete with full aerodynamic package, to works MG ZTs, a British Touring Car Championship MG ZS, the only factory MG SV-R in existence and more.

2021 HSRCA Sydney Classic

As always, we are honoured to be supported by Group N Touring Cars, Group S Sports Cars, Group Q, O and M Sports and Racing Cars, Groups J, K and L, Formulas Vee and Ford, Regularity and Super Sprint and look forward to putting on a full schedule of events for all groups.

At the 2021 Sydney Classic, we’ll also enjoy competition under lights for the first time. On Saturday, the racing will continue on into the evening with a full schedule of race, regularity and super sprint events.

2021 HSRCA Sydney Classic

Historic motor sport is all about the cars and the community, and so the HSRCA welcomes spectators to get up close to the cars, meet their drivers and custodians and get involved. After enjoying the racing track side, spectators can wander through the pits and paddock to enjoy the magnificent display of motorsport history.

The 2021 HSRCA Sydney Classic will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park June 12-13, 2021. Spectator tickets will be available online in the lead-up to the event, as well as at the gate.
