Spa Classic 2024: Report & Gallery

Submitted by on June 6, 2024

Peter Auto organised the 12th edition of the epic Spa Classic in May. This event has taken an indelible place on the calendar of historic motorsport events, bringing together legendary touring cars from the 1970s, sports prototypes and GTs from the 1960s, 1970s and more recently, as well as Group C prototypes.

Despite capricious weather conditions, almost 25,000 enthusiasts came to admire almost 400 historic race cars. Besides lots of action trackside, there was also an impressive show in the village featuring over 1,300 club cars on display.

A special feature was the exceptional Porsche 917 exhibition, which featured, amongst others, a 1971 917/10-002 Spyder Can-Am, 917LH chassis 041, 917k chassis 021, the 917 Spyder Interserie from 1970, chassis 033, and the 917k 1970 – Chassis 008.

There was anything but a lack of entertaining races during the weekend. In Group C, Alex Müller, Ralf Kelleners and Olivier Hart fought exciting duels, thrilling spectators. In terms of number of participants, Group C had the fewest of the weekend, although in terms of entertainment it was one of the better events. It proved once again that people still seriously step on the accelerator during historic races.

With around fifty participants in Classic Endurance Racing 1, the Peter Auto series again turned out to be a winner. The fight for victory was a V8 battle between David and Olivier Hart (Lola T70), Max and Andrew Banks (McLaren M6B) and the Lola T70 of Armand Mille.

Roughly half of the starting grid in Classic Endurance Racing started in Classic Endurance Racing 2. As expected, the race was dominated by the fast two litre sports cars. During qualifying, however, Erik Qvick’s beautiful BMW 320i Turbo Group 5 was at the top of the rankings.

The Endurance Racing Legends were divided into two separate grids. One group was intended for LMP prototypes and fast GT1 cars and the second group was strictly for GT2 cars. In the group for LMP2-prototypes, Alex Müller gave an unprecedented demonstration with the Dome S101 during the first race of the weekend. David and Olivier Hart dominated the second race of the weekend with the Courage C60.

In GT2 it was initially Philip Kadoorie and John Emberson who called the shots. The great battle for the lead came to an end when the Corvette of Emberson and teammate Nigel Greensall could no longer keep up the pace. Kadoorie emphasised during the second race that his win in race 1 had not been a coincidence.

Touring cars from the 1970s continue to work like a magnet for the fans. Also during this edition of the Spa Classic, more than thirty classic touring cars were present, including the BMW CSL, Ford Capri, BMW 635 CSi and Ford Escort.

The first race of the weekend on Saturday evening was dominated by Yves Scemama with a mighty Capri RS3100 Cologne. The Swiss confirmed his speed during the second race on Sunday by taking his second victory of the weekend. The program also included Sixties Endurance of around 50 historic GTs and touring cars, the Classic Touring Challenge and the Gentlemen Challenge.

The Spa Classic remains a must for every lover of historic motorsport. We are already eagerly looking forward to the 13th edition in 2025.
