During the third weekend of September, 2025, the 1,000 km of Nürburgring brought the iconic circuit back to its golden years. This special event has a rich history, combining the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit with the traditional Nordschleife. We were there to capture all the action for you.
On Saturday morning, qualifying took place on the Grand Prix track, followed by the 1,000 km race on both the Grand Prix loop and the Nordschleife. The Nordschleife, also known as the Green Hell, is track unlike any other in the world. Not only the length, but the location and surroundings are also breath-taking and combine for a layout that demands the utmost of any man or machine to challenge it.
As expected, the battle for pole position would be between various Porsche 911s, which usually dominate the field, and set up power dynamics for the main event. While several drivers were setting the tone with their cars, drama unfolded for the winners of the 2024 edition. Ingo Pütz won the ADAC 1000 km last year, and set the fastest time once again, but while sitting on pole position, the 911 RSR suffered from serious engine problems and it was decided to not enter the race. Although eighteen seconds slower, the No. 14 Porsche 911 RSR of Björn and Georg Griesemann inherited pole position in front of the No. 15 Porsche 911 RSR of Michael Hess, Altfrid Heger, and Matthias Wasel, which were more than twenty seconds shy of the fastest time.
In the Tourenwagen Golden Era, which would compete for three laps of the Nordschleife and Grand Prix circuit, the fastest time went to Sebastian Asch’s Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth. Due to several crashes during qualifying, the start of the race was delayed by half an hour, and would finally start at 12:30 pm.
Seventy-nine cars were on the starting grid for the full 1,000 km including the touring cars from the Tourenwagen Golden Era. After three laps on the Nordschleife, their race was finished and the remaining 79 cars had their 1,000 km race.
It quickly became clear that six hours of racing on the demanding Nordschleife would be too much for several cars and drivers, some of which were left stranded left and right across the nearly 27 kilometers, either due to their own mistakes or technical problems. Halfway through the race, roughly 20 cars had already retired prematurely. Even the two fastest Porsches from qualifying didn’t make it to the finish line.
Just 52 drivers crossed the finish line after just over six hours of racing and some 37 grueling laps of the Nordschleife and the Grand Prix circuit. The no. 15 Porsche 911 RSR of Michael Hess, Altfrid Heger, and Matthias Wasel claimed victory. Just over a minute later, the impressive No. 81 Porsche 911 RSR IMSA of Oliver Boyke and Michael Joos crossed the finish line in second place. The top three was completed by the No. 84 Porsche 964 of Alexander Kolb, Vincent Kolb, and Carl-Friedrich Kolb.
The winner of the Tourenwagen Golden Era was Sebastian Asch’s Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth, who took the chequered flag after three laps with a lead of over a minute. Asch shared the podium with Thomas Schmidt, who finished second in his BMW E36 M3, and Joachim Kiesch, who drove his BMW E36 M3 to third place.
In addition to the 1,000 km race, the organizers also prepared a demonstration run for historic cars from endurance races in both the Interserie and CanAm championships. The highlight for us was the renowned Kremer Racing team, which took to the track with a Porsche 935 K1, 935 K2, and a 917K/81. Spectators could also enjoy the Porsche 906, Porsche 910, McLaren M8C, and several other iconic cars from endurance racing history.
We’re already looking forward to the 2026 edition of this unique event held on without doubt the most demanding race track in the world.
