43 years ago, the world lost a hero in Jim Clark.

Where do you start with a guy like Jim? How about his statistics: 33 pole positions, 28 fastest laps, 25 Grand Prix wins, two Formula 1 World Championships (1963, 1965), winner of the Indy 500 (1965), winner of the British Touring Car Championship (1964) and winner of the hearts of millions of adoring fans.

What a man. I could take you to the exact spot I was standing when I heard the news that Jimmy had died. I was just rooted to the spot. I couldn’t believe it. Death was what happened to OTHER people, not to Jimmy. A great tragedy that is not lessened by the passage of the years.

Jim Clark was my father’s favorite, so when I was a kid we followed his career and built models of his cars. I still remember hearing the news of his death. A sad morning.

I met him in august 1967 at Nürburgring-paddock and I was fascinated by his personallity. And than he died some months later, one of the saddest days in my life. He still is my hero.
