Video: Pit Stoppin’ with Nelson Piquet in the ’80s

Submitted by on May 30, 2012

Piquet, 1982

Let’s continue our perusal of the pit stop, this time jumping forward to the ’80s as Nelson Piquet hops into the pits for a fresh set of rubber and some fuel to take him through the ’82 Austrian Grand Prix.

Piquet heads into the pits in first place for an unusual (for the time) spot of planned refueling. It’s not an example of blazing speed, but it’s an excellent example of the innovative ideas that have come up in the search for the fastest path around a Grand Prix.

Plus there’s the stunning Brabham BT50, fireproof racing suits (no helmets) and a wondrous little fuel tank. Charm, warmth and style.
