Best of The Cahier Archive: John Surtees

Submitted by on July 26, 2011

John Surtees, massive legend, winner of six motorcycle World Championships and the 1964 Formula 1 World Drivers Championship. The only person to have won World Championships on both two and four wheels.

Surtees drove for Lotus, Cooper, Lola, Ferrari, Honda, BRM, McLaren and for his own team in an F1 career that spanned 12 years. He won six times for three different manufacturers.

After surviving arguably the most dangerous period of two and four wheeled racing, he suffered the cruelest twist of fate when his son Henry was killed in a racing accident in 2009.

This is the latest in our series of  photo specials showcasing the stunning images from the Cahier Archive. The collection, by photographers Bernard Cahier and his son Paul-Henri are part of a massive collection of 400 000 originals of which 17 000+ pictures are currently available on their website.
